In a battle of the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division’s best, Kenyon-Wanamingo took Round 1.

Friday's highly-anticipated matchup between ranked opponents saw the second-ranked (2A) Knights pull away with a 73-54 victory over fourth-ranked (1A) Goodhue in Kenyon.

The visiting Wildcats led by as much as six in the first half, but the offense sputtered. And all the while, K-W turned a six-point deficit into a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back. The Knights (15-1, 11-0 HVL) hit 11 3-pointers and were 14 of 14 from the free-throw line.

“We had a six-point lead, then we got stuck down at 20,” said Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme. “And while we were struggling shooting, K-W shot the ball very well.”

Audra Clark paced K-W’s attack with 19 points, while Siri Sviggum and Megan Quam had 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Mikayla Miller was the only Wildcat in double figures with 30 points. She also had seven rebounds and five steals. Meredith Watson had nine points and six rebounds, and Shelby Hinsch finished with five points and six boards.

Goodhue (13-4, 7-3 HVL) has four games scheduled this upcoming week, starting on the road Monday at La Crescent. The Wildcats then host Lake City Tuesday, Blooming Prairie Thursday and Triton Friday.
