Zumbrota-Mazeppa was able to keep Friday’s Hiawatha Valley League game against Byron tight throughout.

But, shooting only 25 percent from the field, the Cougars couldn’t get closer than four points in a 43-38 loss in Byron.

“You can’t shoot like that and expect to win,” said Z-M head coach Scott Paukert. “We took 20 more shots than they did, but they shot 44 percent.”

The Cougars’ one bright spot came from Hailey Dykes, who finished with career highs in points (19) and rebounds (10), according to Paukert.

“(Dykes) was 9 of 14 shooting. Take her out, and we were 5-for-40 as a team,” Paukert said.

Byron got a game-high 23 points from Vanessa Anderson.

“We couldn’t stop her,” Paukert said of Anderson. “Any time they needed a basket, they went inside to her.”

Z-M (3-4, 2-3 HVL) gets some extended time off, returning to the court Jan. 7 at home against Triton.
