Freedom rings again
The first July 4th helped British colonists step bravely into a truly new world by declaring themselves free.
More than 230 years later, we reflect on how important their actions and assertions continue to be in our relatively young nation and therefore our lives. The Declaration of Independence set out to ensure:
We have taxation, but with representation.
We have a citizen military that must follow citizen law.
We have a right to a fair trial and to be judged by a jury of our peers.
We have international trade.
The list goes on - and, of course, begins with the conviction that we each have unalienable rights that include life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Saturday will be a good time to reflect on the sacrifice those founders and their families made. The signers of the Declaration mutually pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Our freedom is the result.
So that makes Saturday a good time for celebration as well.
