Football: Z-M recovers from slow start to defeat Cotter
Zumbrota-Mazeppa Coach Willie Rauen said his team may have been overlooking Winona Cotter heading into Friday night’s Southern Football Alliance White Division game.
“We struggled on offense to get things going and struggled to get things moving in the right direction,” Rauen said. “Part of it was that Cotter played pretty good defense and part of it was that we just weren’t in it.”
But the Cougars finally got things moving in the right direction and was able to win 20-0.
Helping lead Z-M was senior quarterback Kurt Gadient. Gadient connected with Ellis Hirman on a 28-yard pass for the squad’s first touchdown, then found Jacob Ugland for a 31-yard scoring pass to lift Z-M to a 13-0 halftime lead.
In the fourth quarter, Gadient completed another 28-yard scoring pass – this time to Collin Carney – for another touchdown.
Gadient completed 10 passes of 14 attempts for 165 yards and one interception. Hirman caught three of those for 58 yards. Teammate Jacob Tschann kicked two extra points and carried the ball 20 times for 70 rushing yards.
The Cougar defense held Cotter to just 76 rushing yards and 6 passing yards. Cotter had been outscored 145-0 in four games this season.
Z-M (3-1, 3-0 SFA White) return to action Friday in a home game against Lewiston-Altura.
