Tied 14-14 with Plainview-Elgin-Millville at the end of regulation, Cannon Falls got off a stellar start in overtime as Hunter Johnson ran in for his third touchdown of the day.

But a big stop on the point-after, a blocked kick by Zach Ploof, changed the momentum in an instant in the extra period.

The Bulldogs’ Bryce Heim scored for the third time on a 2-yard run, then an extra point by Tanner Hofschulte helped P-E-M escape with a 21-20 overtime victory in SFA Red division play in Plainview.

“Both sides played their hearts out,” said Cannon Falls head coach Josh Hofstedt, “and it didn’t work out in our favor in overtime.”

Johnson accounted for 67 of the Bombers’ 134 rushing yards on Friday, scoring from 29 and three yards out to give Cannon Falls a 14-7 lead at halftime. The senior signal-caller was also 6 of 11 passing for 101 yards, and Johnson completed a pass to Jordan Lundell for a two-point conversion. Lundell was the Bombers’ top receiver, coming up with three grabs for 65 yards.

Heim finished the night with 173 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. As a team, the Bulldogs finished with 239 rushing yards, compared to 17 yards in the air.

Cannon Falls (2-4, 1-4 SFA Red) hosts Stewartville next Friday. The Tigers are coming off a 22-0 loss against Kasson-Mantorville in a battle of two top-10 Class 4A teams.
