Football: K-M surges past Cannon Falls
Cannon Falls took an early 6-0 lead over third-ranked (4A) Kasson-Mantorville, but the KoMets responded with 27 straight points, pulling away to secure a SFA Red division victory Friday at John Burch Park in Cannon Falls.
“We did some things very well but gave up too many big plays and failed to hit some big-play opportunities,” said Bombers’ head coach Josh Hofstedt.
With 4 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Cannon Falls took a 6-0 lead following a 1-yard run by Jordan Lundell.
It took K-M until the second quarter to finally get on the board, but the KoMets did it in a big way as Nic Bauer reached pay dirt on a 52-yard scamper to the end zone to tie it at 6-6. K-M took the lead for good with 5:42 left in the second with a 49-yard touchdown run, then Bauer added another score late in the second with a 51-yard rushing touchdown.
Up 20-6 at halftime, the KoMets (4-0, 3-0 SFA Red) tacked on another touchdown as Bauer once again found the end zone on a 17-yard run.
With 4:01 remaining in the third quarter, Lundell helped make it a two-score game, 27-14, on a 17-yard interception return for a touchdown. But another touchdown run by Bauer sealed the deal for K-M as the senior back scored from 26 yards out.
Cannon Falls added one more trip to the end zone late in the game as quarterback Hunter Johnson connected with Brock Peterson for a 36-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-21.
Johnson was able to move the ball in the air, going 12-for-21 for 186 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Peterson was his favorite target with four catches for 90 yards. The run game struggled to get going as the Bombers were held to 50 yards on 20 carries. On defense, Sterling Carlson had 10 tackles and a sack, and Nate Melhouse and Clay Broze each finished with nine tackles.
Cannon Falls (2-2, 1-2 SFA Red) heads to Lake City next Friday.
