Football: Fast start vaults Tigers past Byron
Lake City jumped out to a 28-0 lead by halftime and then waited out the Byron Bears and a 75-minute lightning delay for the Southern Football Alliance Red division win in Byron.
The Tigers scored on the opening drive when Reid Lundell ran around the left end for a 51-yard touchdown and Matt Glasenapp added the extra point.
Lake City added another score in the opening quarter when Elliot Cox had a 6-yard touchdown run for his team-leading 10th touchdown of the season. Glasenapp again added the extra point.
After an Easton Cox interception, Lake City marched down the field and got a 3-yard touchdown run up the middle from Eli Custer. Glasenapp’s extra point on the play was his 100th of his career.
The Tigers’ final score came from Luke Hartzell on an 11-yard run with less than 34 seconds remaining in the half. Glasenapp added the extra point and Lake City held a 28-0 lead at the intermission.
Byron’s only score came in the third quarter off a 19-yard pass by Jhonny Mracek to Kip Knutson. A two-point conversion made the score 28-8.
Byron wasn’t able to get its offense moving otherwise – partly because of Lake City’s season-high six sacks. Michael Noll finished with eight tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery to lead the Tigers.
Offensively, Cox paced Lake City with 15 carries for 114 rushing yards, all of which came in the first half. Lundell tallied 113 yards on nine carries, while Hartzell ran the ball 16 times for 53 yards.
Lake City (3-3 overall, 2-3 SFA Red) travels to Plainview-Elgin-Millville next Friday.
