Football: Fast first half leads Goodhue to win
Making up for Friday’s postponement, Goodhue had little trouble putting away Southland, taking a 22-0 halftime lead before coming away with a 22-6 Southern Football Alliance Blue division victory Saturday in Adams.
Garett Huemann tacked on the Wildcats’ first touchdown, reaching the end zone on a 6-yard run in the first quarter. Later in the period, quarterback Tyler Schumacher helped make it a 14-0 game with an 11-yard run for a score. Schumacher would find Alex Thomforde in the end zone for the two-point conversion.
Garett finished with 20 yards on 10 carries, and Riley Huemann got the bulk of the carries for Goodhue with 38 yards on 15 carries. Through the air, Schumacher was 5-for-9 for 40 yards, and Jack Pasch was 3-for-5 for 57 yards. Thomforde was the Wildcats’ top pass-catcher with five grabs for 58 yards.
Goodhue’s defense got in on the scoring in the second quarter as Sam McNamara picked off a pass and went 52 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats finished with four takeaways, with interceptions from McNamara, Cody Nord and Thomforde, and a fumble recovery from Chuck Dahling. Austin Buck was a force on the defensive end with 10 tackles and a pair of sacks.
Goodhue (2-4, 2-4 SFA Blue) plays host to Fillmore Central on Friday.
