Football: Defense leads Goodhue to victory

Goodhue Coach Tony Poncelet said his squad’s tough defense was a key factor in the Wildcats’ 20-6 win over Fillmore Central Friday night in the Southern Football Alliance Blue Division game.

“We got off to a great start and were ahead 14-0 at the half,” Poncelet said. “And then when our offense sputtered, our defense was there to pick us up.

“Fillmore Central’s touchdown was a fumble, scoop-and-score in the third quarter so our defense didn’t give up a touchdown all night.”

Leading that group was Goodhue’s Garett Huemann, who had 12 tackles. Teammates Riley Huemann and Chuck Dahling each added nine tackles and Cody Nord pitched in with an interception.

The Wildcats scored first in the game when Riley Huemann ran in a 1-yard score and then caught a two-point conversion pass from Jacob Pasch.

Goodhue’s other two touchdowns were both passes from Tyler Schumacher to Sam McNamara – one a 10-yard grab in the first quarter and the other a 13-yard snag in the fourth frame.

Schumacher completed 17 of 25 passes for 170 yards and one interception. Alex Thomforde caught 13 of those passes for 144 yards, while McNamara finished with three grabs for 26 yards.

On the ground, Riley Huemann carried the ball 17 times for 42 yards, while Garett Huemann rushed eight times for 32 yards.

Goodhue (3-4 conference and overall) travels to Rushford-Peterson on Wednesday.
