A fire broke out at Radio Shack in Lake City Wednesday night, causing "substantial damage," Lake City Fire Chief Todd Hubbard said.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 7:20 p.m. to the block near Highway 61 and Center Street. The electronics store had already closed for the night, Hubbard said, and no one was inside when the blaze broke out.

Crews had the fire contained by 9 p.m., Lake City Fire Department officials said.

A fire marshal was brought in Thursday to determine the cause of the fire. More details will be known next week, Hubbard said.

Erik Brunkow, owner of Bronk's Bar & Grill - which shares a building wall with Radio Shack - said his restaurant was evacuated at about 7:30 p.m.

"It was about 75 percent filled with smoke," he said.

Brunkow said the business suffered smoke damage, but escaped water or fire damage. The restaurant and bar were closed all day Thursday to allow for crews to clean, Brunkow said, but opened at its normal time Friday.

Swan Jeweler's, another neighbor to Radio Shack, also suffered smoke damage, Hubbard said. That store was closed at the time of the blaze, and no one was in the building.

Voicemails left with Radio Shack owner Wendell Noble and Swan Jeweler's were not immediately returned.

Assisting Lake City firefighters were the Zumbro Falls Fire Department, Wabasha Fire Department, Lake City Police Department and Lake City Ambulance.
