Family claims 'Sunshine' has Minnesota origin

For more than 70 years, the wistful ballad “You Are My Sunshine” has persisted as one of the most recognizable songs in American culture.


Although the tune is most commonly associated with the South — it’s one of two official songs of Louisiana — a local family says its lyrics have Midwestern roots.

Minnie Hokanson of Cannon Falls, who died Nov. 29 at age 103, wrote the song as a poem and mailed it to country musician Paul Rice, said daughter Kathy Hauschildt of Red Wing.
