Faith in Action presents "Driving Miss Daisy"

Last year, Faith in Action volunteers drove more than 17,000 miles, transporting older Red Wing residents to doctor appointments, church and other activities.

Now, to help raise money for its programs, Faith in Action is holding a gala event at the Sheldon Theatre, complete with wine, hors d'oeuvres and a showing of the film "Driving Miss Daisy."

"Part of this is telling our story," said George Snyder, a member of FIA's board of directors.

The 1989 Oscar-winning film stars Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman and portrays the relationship between an elderly woman and her hired driver.

Faith in Action, a faith-based volunteer group, works to enrich the lives of older Red Wing residents. In addition to transportation services, FIA volunteers also spend hours visiting Red Wing residents and taking over for caregivers who need a break.

"People are able to stay in their homes for a longer period of time," Snyder said.

Another part of next week's gala will feature a video of interviews with both FIA volunteers and people who receive FIA's services.

"It's the heart of the evening," board member LaVonne Lommel said of the video.
