Enjoy summer's celebration
From kites flying high above the city to music and food by the river, this year’s River City Days offers a host of activities for all ages and interests — and budgets.
The community celebration, which runs Aug. 1-3 this year, includes everything from music, food and carnival games to an arts and crafts show, Bingo, parade and fireworks.
New to the lineup this year is the kite festival, organized by the Sister Cities Commission. Set for 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2, the festival will include contests and prizes, demonstrations by “Mr. Kite” and food vendors on site at Memorial Park.
Fireworks also will make their return to River City Days after flooding washed out Fourth of July plans. They will fill the sky at dusk Sunday.
River City Days organizer Joe Dubbe said there will be more exhibitors than in the past and more local companies participating in the event, setting up booths and hosting activities.
Plenty of familiar fun will return as well, including carnival games and booths that not only offer activities, but help local groups raise money and awareness.
“There’s hundreds of volunteers out there,” Dubbe said, and organizations recruit their own volunteers and help for the festival.
Carnival games and other activities will offer families something little ones can enjoy, he said. “There’s a lot of stuff that we’ve geared toward younger kids.”
But older River City Days visitors won’t be left out. Dawnbreakers Kiwanis’ Bingo tent will once again be stationed at Bay Point Park, aimed at providing a good time for seniors, organizers said. The tent will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
A variety of music, including the Sheldon Brass Band, cover bands and other artists, also offer entertainment for anyone, and food stands will give River City Days visitors the Taste of Red Wing.
The newest Royal Ambassadors also will be named, during the coronation Sunday at the Sheldon Theatre.
Plenty of other offerings are available, whether you want to spend the whole weekend or just a few hours enjoying the River City Days celebration. More information, including a full schedule, is available at http://rivercitydays.org/.
