Ellsworth edges L-C, Two Rivers to win Bi-State
LA CROSSE - Ellsworth High School's wrestling team showed itself to be the best in Division 2 by edging out top-ranked Luxemburg-Casco and Two Rivers to win the Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center Saturday.
No. 2 Ellsworth won both its division and the overall meet title with 255 points, just two ahead of No. 3 Luxembug-Casco while No. 1 Two Rivers was third in Division 2 with 230 points and fourth overall behind Division 3 champ Stratford, who had 236 points. Holmen won Division 1 with 215 points.
EHS had two champions, Jens Lantz at 126 and Gabe Frandsen at 160. Lantz won his third straight Bi-State title by beating up one of the state's top wrestlers in Muskego's Austin Quartullo by a 16-2 major decision. Frandsen won his second straight Bi-State title with a 9-7 win over another highly regarded Wisconsin prep wrestler in Wausau West's Travis Hettinga.
The Panthers had four other wrestlers place in the meet. Logan Kemmerer finished third at 170, Brad Cain placed sixth at 138, Tristan Mueller placed sixth at 145, and Anders Lantz finished ninth at 120.
Ellsworth has another tough tournament upcoming next weekend in the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukauna, wrestling against some of the best high school teams in the whole nation.
Two other area schools competed at Bi-State. Mathias Tobin had Hudson best individual finish, third place at heavywieght. Also placing for the Raiders were Matt Koski, eighth at 120 pounds; Sawyer Massie, seventh at 145; Dylan Anderson, ninth at 160 and Eliot Motu, seventh at 220. The Raiders finished third in Division 1 with 164 points.
New Richmond finished seventh in Division 1 with 149 points. Derek Dowd had the Tigers' best finish in fifth at 138 pounds. Also placing for NR were Bryce Younger, sixth at 120; Caleb Neumann, 10th at 160 and Dominic Ficociello, seventh at 170.
