Ellsworth Chamber launches ambassador program

ELLSWORTH -- Interest in the new Youth Ambassador program is mushrooming.

"I've been getting calls and e-mails," said Linda Hines of the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce.

She leads the program, which replaces the Miss Ellsworth program. When the June 2010 Ellsworth Cheese Festival concluded, so did the last royal court's reign.

The chamber is recruiting area high school juniors for Youth Ambassador, she said. Two youths will be chosen annually. The boys and girls will make an 11-month commitment, serving from February to December and be expected to submit a project proposal.

"They won't be going to parades," she said, referring to a duty of the past royalty.

The ambassadors will make most of their contributions here at home, she added.

The first pair will be selected around Christmas time and be announced at the chamber's annual membership dinner.

The Youth Ambassador pamphlet explains that ambassadors can gain leadership skills, educational growth and appreciation for their hometown while also benefiting the community. The program is designed to add value for future education and employment opportunities. The experience looks good on an application and is a means toward earning money, the pamphlet also states.

Applicants must tell their thoughts and ideas for either implementing a new service project or improving one of the chamber's existing projects. The ambassadors will be required to attend and assist at each of the local chamber-sponsored events.

Information about the new program will be available on the first day of school for the 2010-11 year.
