Editorial: Time to ask
The community rumblings have been growing in recent weeks as Red Wing Public Schools wraps up open houses/discussions at its various buildings.
Questions — some call them doubts — about the shortcomings of each existing facility are surfacing. People slowly are starting to voice concerns about the district’s failure to care for property (more nicely phrased as deferred maintenance) and whether a referendum proposal should shift from a new structure to a repairs package.
School Board members talked briefly about community support and perception at Monday’s meeting. They pondered whether it’s time to survey the community.
We say it is. The initial effort to measure public opinion needn’t involve a $15,000 survey, however. The district could start with a simple online survey as they did with the transportation and school makeup day issues.
The district made the right moves with parents’ help. That could happen again.
