Editorial: See those cycles
Fewer motorists died in 2013 than in 2012 on Minnesota roads. Overall, the death toll was 375, down from 395 a year earlier and the peak from past decade of 567 in 2004.
But the state saw an increase in deaths of motorcycle drivers — going from 55 in 2011 to 66 in 2013. That’s according to preliminary figures from the Minnesota Department of Safety.
The local motorcycle season officially will begin Saturday with the Spring Flood Run. Depending on the weather, hundreds and perhaps thousands of bikers will cruise around Lake Pepin. They will raise money for Gillette?Children’s Hospital.
The annual run also serves as a reminder that motorists need to start seeing motorcycles. In a few days, people can expect to see children on bicycles sharing the road.
We encourage all drivers to make good decisions. Be safe. Drive sober. Buckle up or wear a helmet. Slow down. Put the cellphone away.
Let’s have a safe Spring Flood Run and a safer 2014.
