Editorial: No rocket's red glare

Rough landing: Red Wing won't have Independence Day fireworks this year. This week's announcement likely will have some citizens seeing red -- red anger and red ink... but, of course, no red glare come July 4.

Location, permissions and money are among the factors behind the cancellation. While you can't blame thieves entirely, the January loss of cans -- the primary funding source -- from a Mississippi Alumination collection bin didn't help. (Neither did the committee's failure to alert the community early on that a traditional Fourth of July might be at risk.)

Fortunately, the Prairie Island Indian Community will have fireworks again this year. Celebrations also are planned up and down the Mississippi River. Just not in Red Wing. What a shame.

Soaring high: Red Wing Police Department has started preparations for Night to Unite, a crime prevention effort available to every neighborhood. This year's event will be Aug. 6.

If you want to hold an event on your block or in your community park, call 651-267-2600 and ask for community service officer Tim Bohmbach.
