Editorial: Highway officers are always there
Minnesota and Wisconsin state patrol officers cruise our highways. That's of their job -- day in and day out, mile after mile. Their presence slows down speeding motorists and results in safer roads for everyone.
Anyone who considers a trooper's office as "Easy Street," however, should think again. These professionals respond to dangerous, life-threatening situations. And they do so in all kinds of weather.
Just this week Red Wing-based Dan Lewis was assisting a motorist when another driver lost control on ice and rear ended the squad car. Fortunately no one suffered life-threatening injuries, although Lewis is being evaluated for neck and back pain.
Troopers are always there, always prepared to assist, always ready to help local enforcement.
Certainly giving speeding tickets is part of their job, but they do so much more. Don't take them for granted.
