The new Red Wing Gives mosaic is symbolic of more than simply people who gave to local nonprofits on Give to the Max Day. Each tile also represents the extra effort hundreds of people made to donate after the website for the event crashed.

Some people (fortunately) gave in the wee hours Thursday before the Internet woes began.

Some people kept trying and successfully found one of the few intermittent windows when givemn.org worked during the day.

Some people ditched the website, choosing to drive or walk to the YMCA -- Red Wing Gives headquarters -- and drop off cash or checks.

Some people simply waited until Friday to give online.

The point is that people gave, even when it became inconvenient. And they keep on giving -- of themselves and from their pocketbooks.

The mosaic represents all that plus the dozens of local nonprofits that do so much good.

Finally, the tiles symbolize the many lives pieced together -- thanks to a generous community that lets nothing stand in its way.
