County history center's new website up and running
The Goodhue County Historical Society has launched a new website with a simplified address, a new look and expanded options to interact with the society. E-mail addresses have been changed to match.
“This has been a long project,” Interim Director Amy Nelson said.
First, the society secured a grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation, headquartered in Rochester. The Goodhue County Board added a $2,000 technology grant, Nelson said.
Sarah Kuglin of Redwood Valley Technical Solutions in Redwood Falls, Minn., who has done a number of websites for historical organizations, was contracted to develop the new site.
The society purchased three “domain” names — goodhuecountyhistory.org, goodhistory.org and the old site, www.goodhuehistory.mus.mn.us, for five years.
Grant funds also paid for hosting the site. Staff members Johanna Grothe and Diane Buganski, who worked with Kuglin on site development, are able to update it.
“It’s a whole new look,” Nelson said. “It has more information than the old one.” The site has a link to the Dalby Database, an index that contains more than 323,000 entries for burials in Goodhue County and several other area counties.
Other new features, Nelson said, include the ability to shop online from the History Center gift shop, to make donations and to purchase tickets for events or rent the meeting room. The gift shop’s collection of books for sale is on the site.
As the website is developed, officials hope to expand the capacity for doing online searches of a variety of databases.
