Controlled burns scheduled in Red Wing
A series of controlled burns will be conducted on Sorin’s Bluff and the Billings-Tomfohr Conservation area Oct. 16-18, according to the city of Red Wing.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Corps of Minnesota will work with the city and Red Wing School District to oversee the burns of native prairie land. The purpose is to reduce invasive species and stimulate existing plants, according to a press release.
The schedule of the controlled burns is dependent on weather, but they are tentatively set for the following locations:
• Oct. 16 – South face of Sorin’s Bluff. Three units will be burned adjacent to Bush Street.
• Oct. 17 – South face of main bluff at Billings-Tomfohr Conservation Area. Two units will be burned north of Twin Bluff Middle School.
• Oct. 18 – Reserved as a backup day in case weather interferes with the other burns.
Authorities caution residents to avoid these areas while the burns are taking place. Smoke from the fires will be noticeable for great distances because of the bluff locations.
