Controlled burns planned on Barn Bluff Saturday
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota, in cooperation with the city of Red Wing and the Red Wing School District, will be conducting several controlled prescribed burns March 29 of the prairies on Barn Bluff and the Billings-Tomfohr Conservation Area.
The goal is to reduce invasive species in these areas and to stimulate existing native plants. The burns are the first steps of a long range management plan to preserve and enhance these native prairie communities within Red Wing, according to the city.
The burns are dependent on weather and wind conditions .
Fires and smoke will be noticeable from great distances due to the bluff top prairie locations. Residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid these areas while the burns are taking place and while crew members are on the scene.
