Column: Capture the moment with a photo

Email

Photo of the Day remains a mainstay on our website. Introduced in 2010, the popular feature currently rotates on the Republican Eagle’s homepage “slider” with stories that have a dominant photo element.

When we began, we knew that R-E staff members would take most of photos — at first. However, readers soon started contributing photographs they snapped of events, unusual images or beautiful scenery. A few people have submitted dozens of photos, more people have sent one or two.

People will find Photo of the Day at www.republican-eagle.com.

You can contribute a photograph by clicking on the image, which will take you to the full image plus a cutline. “Click here to submit your photo” and you’re on your way.

Any photograph you submit for consideration must be an original work that does not infringe any privacy, intellectual property or other rights of any third parties. A photo of someone at a park, for example, is fine because the photographer captured the image in a public setting. A photo taken in someone’s living room might not qualify.

Ideally, the person submitting the photo took it. Regardless, the person must either own or have rights to convey the submitted photo to us.

People also should be aware that any photographs they submit may appear in our print publications. By submitting a photo, the person grants Red Wing Republican Eagle and its sister publications non-exclusive, royalty-free copyright license to publish the picture online and in print in Republican Eagle, RiverTown Newspaper Group or Forum Communications Co. media. Occasionally, we hear from other readers who want to buy a copy of a photo. We will direct them to the photographer, because the photo still belongs to them.

Please remember that Photo of the Day is designed to reflect what's happening in our readership area. A photo must be an accurate representation of the scene; do not digitally alter the content. You don’t have to be a professional to participate. Just give it your best shot and be willing to share.
