Coast Guard suspends search for Myhre
MIAMI - The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Friday evening for a missing Bay City man off the Florida Atlantic coast near Miami.
Mark Myhre, 62, was reported missing by family members since Christmas Day when he went sailing alone aboard his new boat the Galilean. The boat was found a week later beached near Biscayne National Park abanonded
Coast Guard units along with units and personnel from Miami-Dade were involved in the search which extended all the way down into the Florida Keys.
According to reporter Kevin Wadlow of KeysNet.com, Myhre last spoke with his son Chad on Christmas Day while the boat was sailing off the Middle Keys.
Chad Myhre told WPLG-TV in Miami that his father had just purchased the Galilean in Fort Myers and was sailing to Key West and up the Keys on a solo "shakedown" cruise.
"He was sailing around the Keys to get used to the boat," the younger Myhre told reporter Todd Tongen of WPLG-TV.
Myhre was reportedly going to sail the boat in the Caribbean Sea and to the Panama Canal.
