Youth joining World Famine March
Youths from seven area congregations will participate in World Vision's 30-hour Famine March 11 and 12. They will meet at Vasa Lutheran Church for a crash course in global hunger by fasting 30 hours and raising money to help feed and care for hungry children and their families around the globe.
Soup suppers held
St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls, will hold soup suppers from 5 to 6:15 p.m. each Wednesday during Lent. The church youth group will serve the first supper March 9, and the meals will continue through April 13.
First Presbyterian honors Girl Scouts
First Presbyterian Church will celebrate Girl Scout Sunday this weekend. Worship is set for 10:30 a.m., and fellowship will follow.
Lay speaking classes offered
The Methodist River Valley District's committee on lay speaking will hold classes next month at First United Methodist Church in Red Wing. Basic and advanced classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 9.
The basic class costs $15, plus the text "Lay Speaking Ministries: Basic Course Participant's Book" must be purchased prior to class from www.cokesbury.com. The advanced class is "Leading in Prayer" offered at a cost of $30, which includes all required materials.
Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Registration is through the Minnesota Annual Conference website at www.minnesotaumc.org.
Chili feed, auction planned March 13
First English Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls, will hold a chili feed and auction March 13 to raise funds for two projects. Half the proceeds will go toward building debt and half toward "Partners in Hope, Building a Future," which is gathering funds for the 100th anniversary of Lutheran Ministry in Tanzania.
The silent auction will run 9 a.m. to noon. Donations are being accepted.
The chili feed will start at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $5 per person and $!5 per family.
Zumbrota church holding concert and chili supper
First Congregational United Church of Christ of Zumbrota will celebrate the installation of an elevator with a concert and chili supper Sunday. Donations for the Zumbro Valley Flood Recovery Fund will be collected.
With One Voice, a choir from United Redeemer Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, will sing at 4 p.m. Following the concert, vegetarian and meat chilis will be served.
Special worship service planned at First Lutheran
First Evangelical Lutheran Church will celebrate Mardi Gras on Sunday with a special worship service including Dixieland music by Dave Watson and friends. A potluck meal and games will follow 9:30 a.m. worship.
Dress is casual - no suits, ties, etc. - and people are encouraged to dress in Mardi Gras colors of green, gold and purple. Bring a dish to share.
Ash Wednesday worship will be at noon and 6:30 p.m. Soup and bread will be served following the noon service, and there will be an evening meal starting at 5 p.m. Cost is $2 per plate.
Sunday Supper/Loaves and Fishes is a full dinner open and free to everyone. It will be served at 5 p.m. March 13 at the First United Methodist Church, 403 East Ave.
Lenten services start in Ellsworth
English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, will begin its Lenten series of Wednesday evening services begins next week on Ash Wednesday, with worship at 6:30 p.m. The series will focus on prayer life and and the theme is "The Voice of God," with characters from the Passion of Jesus letting people in on their conversations with God.
The topics will be March 9, "Finding Help in Our Weakness," March 16, "Serving Only One Master," March 23, "Forgetting Yourself for Jesus' Sake," March 30, "Laying Your Life on the Line," April 6, "Suffering With a Broken World," and April 13 "The Fellowship of His Suffering."
The youth group will serve soup supper at 5:30 p.m.
