St. Paul’s Fringe starts mission drive

St. Paul’s Fringe youth group will be at Culver’s from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday Oct. 7 for a fundraiser in support of a 2014 mission trip to Kittery, Maine.


CROP Walk is Oct. 6

The Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty or CROP Walk will be Oct. 6. Stepping off at 1 p.m., the walk will begin with registration at 12:30 in Central Park.

The CROP Walk takes a 2.5 mile loop. Walkers collect pledges and gain perspective on how far people in other countries must walk every day simply to get potable water.

Donation envelopes are still available at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church among other locations.

Care packages going to new college students

First Lutheran Church has started assembling care packages for college freshmen. Packages will be mailed in late October.

People may drop off small items at the office or place them in the care box in the narthex. Pens, snacks, chocolate and tiny books are suggestions. Hand-written notes of encouragement also are welcome.

Knights of Columbus event planned

Area Knights of Columbus chapters will participate Saturday Oct. 12 in the Rediscover Catholic Celebration at the St. Paul River Center. Featured speakers include Archbishop John Nientstedt and Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas. Members at St. Pius V Catholic Church, Cannon Falls, will hold caravan that Saturday.

St. Pius V group then will hold its annual Columbus Day banquet Sunday Oct. 13 at the Cannon Falls Golf Course.

Garage No Sale again gives away goods

English Lutheran Church, Ellsworth, will hold its annual Garage No Sale 5 to 8 p.m. Friday Oct. 4 and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday Oct. 5. Essential daily items in good condition are given to people in need.

Donations of specific items only will be accepted 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday. These include coats, hats and mittens; clothes of all sizes; baby items, but no car seats; and kitchenware, bedding, beds, couches and chairs.

No electronics or sporting goods will be accepted; the church’s community mission team reserves the right to refuse any items.

A special session of Sermons in Shorts will follow at noon in East End Park. Food will be served free.

Area churches are welcome to contribute items to the briefs, which run every weekend on the Religion page.
