Catch a dose of Medicine
Local youngsters make up the band Seb's Medicine. Hear them perform 7:30 p.m. Friday July 26 at the Central Park Band Shell - their debut performance at the summer concert hot spot.
Sixteen-year-old Samuel Ketcham on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, 17-year-old Jack Rudquist on lead guitar, 16-year-old Noah Topliff on bass guitar and 16-year-old Mason Swanson on drums complete the self-proclaimed rock 'n' roll ensemble.
Formed over regular jamming session in late July of 2011, Seb's Medicine released a seven-song demo in March 2012 and a six-song EP "Psycho Semantics" early this year.
While the albums have not gone platinum, their tenacious sound is quite impressive considering their collective ages.
Songs and lyrics are all written by Ketcham.
"I was always able to sing, but wanted to play guitar," he said, "I took lessons and fell in love with it all. Everything else came naturally."
For bassist Topliff, the experience with the band has been empowering, especially since his journey in the music world follows some large shoes to fill. His dad, Neal Topliff, works as an accomplished professional pianist.
"I have been around music my whole life," Topliff said, "ever since I was in diapers."
He himelf took piano lessons for five years before switching to guitar. When the opportunity to play bass with the band arose, Topliff took it - although he had never played the instrument before.
"It kind of just clicked with me," he explained. Practice by practice he learned the skills and songs, drawing on his guitar knowledge for guidance.
"I'm usually a front-and-center type of person and typically bass players are not," Topliff added. "But now that I play, I love it."
Regular performers at Hobgoblin Music Loft, Seb's Medicine nenbers said they forward to their upcoming show in downtown Red Wing.
"We hope for a lot dancing and a big turnout - there is a little something for everyone," Ketcham said.
