Car show fundraiser rolls into town Sunday
Fall colors will mix with hot rod red Sunday as the Drive for Kids car show and cruise returns to Red Wing.
Now in its 11th year, the benefit is expected to bring more than a hundred vintage and unique cars to the Lake Pepin area.
Funds raised will benefit youth programs and support services by Red Wing Youth Outreach and Twin Cities-based Bolder Options.
For the first time in the event’s history, Red Wing will host both the starting and finish lines of the drive, which tours a scenic loop of nearby river towns, Youth Outreach case manager Mandy Arden said.
“This is the largest fundraiser that Red Wing Youth Outreach does,” she said.
Last year, Drive for Kids brought in $28,000 for the two groups, helping around 1,100 kids, according to an event brochure.
Two of the largest local donors this year are Red Wing Shoe Co. and Treasure Island Resort & Casino, Arden said.
Red Wing Youth Outreach was founded in 1993 to reduce chemical abuse problems among young people in the community, according to its website. The group offers year-round programming for kids during and after school.
“We have five programs right now,” Arden said. They are individual life coaching; an independent life skills group; mental illness support; chemical abuse support; and work experience through a teen secondhand store.
Bolder Options — which expanded its services to Rochester in 2010 — offers mentoring and wellness activities for at-risk youth, according to its website.
Donations from the 2012 Drive for Kids went to purchase running shoes, bikes and race fees for kids taking part in a triathlon program, the group said.
Drive for Kids starts 9 a.m. Sunday with a mass start at the American Legion Leo C. Peterson Post 54.
A curbside car show follows in Red Wing noon to 4:30 p.m., with free lunch for early registrants.
The show will include voting and awards for participating cars in Top 20, Youth, Committee and Mayor’s Choice categories.
“It will be a really relaxed, family friendly atmosphere,” Arden said.
