The First Farmers & Merchants family of banks acquired White Rock Bank in the fall of 2010. The plan always was to integrate White Rock with First Farmers & Merchants, officials said, but they first wanted to make sure all policies, procedures and methods were finalized.

Customers can continue to use existing checks and cards; future checks or cards will carry the First Farmers & Merchants name. Branches in Cannon Falls, White Rock, Goodhue, Bellechester and Red Wing will have the same hours.

To celebrate the change, the banks will offer coffee and cookies during the week of Aug. 26 and employees will be available for questions.

Bedding techniques shown at dairy field day

The University of Minnesota Extension will showcase two bedding systems that may help dairy farmers cut costs and provide maximum comfort for their cows during a dairy field day July 23 in Goodhue County.

The day will start at 9 a.m. at Arendt's Holstein Resort, 66272 430th Ave, Mazeppa. The Arendts use three sand lanes to reclaim sand for reuse as bedding.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., the tour will move to Huneke Dairy, 25409 County 16 Blvd., Goodhue. The Hunekes utilize separated manure solids to deep bed their herd.

The program will conclude at 1 p.m.

The field day is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension dairy team with cooperation from the Minnesota Dairy Initiative and Riverland Farm Business Management programs.
