Boys Tennis: Toivonen advances past Day 1 of sections
Looking to get back to the Class 2A state tournament, Red Wing senior Isaac Toivonen put himself in good position after going 2-0 during Day 1 of the Section 1AA individual tournament at Twin Bluff Middle School in Red Wing.
After a first-round bye, Toivonen opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Lakeville North’s Nick Vossen. The Wingers’ No. 1 player followed that with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Austin’s Colton Detwiler.
In other singles action, Red Wing’s Nick Powers started Thursday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Albert Lea’s Cole Keyeski before losing 6-1, 6-1 in the second round by Lakeville North’s Sean Kelly.
Red Wing’s doubles team of Noah Christenson and Alex Holm nearly got through Day 1 after a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Ethan Anderson and Jens Ourada, followed by a 6-1, 7-5 win over Hastings’ Craig Nielsen and Alex Zuzek. Christenson and Holm’s day would come to a close following a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Rochester Century’s Sahil Chhugani and Nicholas Aney.
The Wingers’ No. 2 doubles team of Marcus Veith and Travis Toivonen began tournament play with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Century’s Jeffrey Park and Matthew Christensen. In the next round, Toivonen and Veith would bow out after losing to top seeds Maxwell Parkinson and Justin Yee of Lakeville North, 6-4, 6-1.
At 9 a.m. on Tuesday May 27, Isaac Toivonen will head to Farmington High School to compete in Day 2 of the section tournament.
