Boys Tennis: Toivonen advances to 1AA singles semifinals
Red Wing junior Isaac Toivonen remains in the hunt for a state tournament berth after reaching the Section 1AA singles semifinal Thursday in Rochester.
Winning his first match 6-0, 6-0, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory in match No. 2, Toivonen will face Northfield's Evan Johnson in the semifinals Tuesday at Rochester Mayo High School. Joining Toivonen and Johnson will be Jason Howard of Rochester John Marshall and Chase Roseth of Lakeville South.
Toivonen will try to become the first Winger to qualify for the state tournament as an individual since Stefan Voigt in 2007.
"He had a good day," Wingers' head coach Matt Kavanagh said of Isaac Toivonen. "He was the No. 1 seed overall and got the bye, which was helpful. He had a fairly easy second-round match, then in the third round, we thought it was going to be more difficult against Sebastian Vile (of Rochester Mayo). But Isaac blew him off the court with a lot of power and a good kick serve."
Red Wing's No. 1 doubles team of Luke Bryant and Nick Powers just missed the semifinals, winning their first two matches before eventually losing in the third match.
