For the second straight home meet, the Red Wing boys tennis team played host to a top-10 team in the Class 2A rankings. And for the second straight home meet, the Wingers came out of the meet with a loss as the visiting Panthers took a 5-2 victory Friday at Twin Bluff Middle School.

“I’m pretty happy with how we did today. We just ran into a really hot team,” said Red Wing head coach Matt Kavanagh.

Last spring, the Wingers were able to beat Lakeville North, 4-3. But in Friday’s meet, the Panthers’ doubles were the deciding factor in the road victory. In the three doubles matches, Red Wing was able to win just eight games as the Panthers’ duos gave the team a 3-0 advantage.

In singles play, Red Wing was able to get a split with Lakeville North. In the No. 1 match, the Wingers’ Isaac Toivonen was able to regroup after a 6-3 first-set loss, taking the second set 6-3 against Sean Kelly. Playing a full third set to break the tie, Toivonen completed the comeback, taking the deciding set 6-3.

“They’re playing a state-caliber match over there,” Kavanagh said during the Toivonen/Kelly match. “The key for Isaac is to keep the points short, no more than five hits.”

The Wingers’ other win came from senior Alex Holm, who dominated his match with the Panthers’ Lucas Heliman, 6-2, 6-1.

“Alex played the best I’ve seen him play all season,” Kavanagh said.

At No. 4 singles, Red Wing’s Travis Toivonen battled with Lakeville North’s Nick Vossen for three sets, with Vossen finally pulling away with the 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 win.

Weather permitting, the Wingers will hit the road on Monday to take on Lakeville South in a make-up match from April 16.
