Boys Swimming: Wingers take third at conference relay meet
Red Wing took third place at the 2012 Missota Conference Relay Meet Thursday in Farmington.
The Wingers scored 385 points as Farmington won the meet with 544 points. Chaska was second at 446 points.
"Tonight's meet went really well," Red Wing head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "It's always a little scary for a new coach going into their first meet with a new team, not knowing how swimmers are going to race. I was very pleasantly surprised with the boys' performance tonight."
O'Brien is in his first year as the boys coach after becoming head coach for Red Wing's girls swimming and diving team two seasons ago.
In eight relays, Red Wing took first place twice, second place once, third place twice, fourth place once and fifth place twice.
The Wingers' 400-yard individual medley relay team of Adam Sienczak, Josh Berg, Ethan Myers and Tanner Alms won in 4 minutes, 10.54 seconds.
"This is always a really fun relay because high schoolers don't get to swim a 100 IM, with the last time possibly having swam it was when they were 10 years old," O'Brien said. "They are a lot stronger and faster now and can really fly. (Alms) really enjoyed swimming this tonight."
Red Wing's 850 freestyle relay team, consisting of Ricky Turcotte, Myers, Sienczak and Alms, also won in 8:18.78.
The Wingers were second in the 400 medley relay and came in third in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 butterfly relay.
Hunter Connelly secured a state cut in the 100 backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay with a time of 57.86. Chris Byrne was within one second of his best 100 butterfly time in 1:01.35 in the 400 medley relay and Alms swam the last leg, 500 yards, of the 850 freestyle relay in less than five minutes. He won the Class 1A state title last year in 4:41.10.
Byrne also took third in the 1-meter diving competition with a 150.20. Evan Carufel, of Farmington, took first with 193.45.
Red Wing returns to the pool Dec. 13 at River Falls (Wis.).
