Boys Swimming: Wingers sixth at True Team
St. Thomas Academy pulled away from the field to win the Section 1A boys swimming and diving true team championship Saturday in Austin. Red Wing finished sixth with 1,001 points, well behind the Cadets’ title-clinching 1,781. The rest of the top five included Simley (1,332), Northfield (1,263), Mankato West (1,189.5) and Austin (1,128).
Tanner Alms won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 44.76 seconds, then followed with another stellar performance in the 500 free, holding off Simley’s Michael Modica by less than a second. Alms finished with a time of 4:51.09 in the 500 compared to Modica’s 4:51.81.
Hunter Connelly also topped the podium, taking a thrilling 0.03-second victory over St. Michael’s Sam Johanns. Connely’s time of 53.62 in the 100 backstroke just edged Johanns’ 53.65.
The Wingers are back in the pool Thursday when the squad travels to Shakopee for a Missota Conference dual.
