Boys Swimming: Wingers place fifth at Missota championship

Competing in the final Missota Conference championship meet, the Red Wing boys swimming and diving team finished in fifth place out of six teams with 237 team points Saturday at Farmington.

Chanhassen/Chaska won the team title with a score of 502, followed by Farmington (421), Northfield (407) and Shakopee (300).

Senior Tanner Alms came up with both of Red Wing’s wins on Saturday. He first took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 46.60 seconds, then wrapped us his second win in the 500 free at 4:53.82.

Chris Byrne put together a solid meet, finishing second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 338.70. Byrne then took fourth in the 100 butterfly at 58.85.

Red Wing finished the day with a pair of relay teams taking third place. The 200 freestyle relay team of Dan O’Keefe, Byrne, Garrett Welsch and Alms finished with a time of 1:32.53, and Welsch, Calvin Roth, Byrne and Alms wrapped up third place at 3:30.99.

Now, the Wingers’ focus shifts to the Section 1A meet, which starts with prelims on Feb. 20 and concludes with the championship meet on Feb. 22 at the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights.
