Boys Swimming: Wingers drop home meet to Storm Hawks
Swimming in its third home meet in a week, the Red Wing boys swimming and diving team had a tough task against visiting Chanhassen/Chaska. Ultimately, the Storm Hawks were too much for the Wingers in a 109.5-74.5 victory at the Twin Bluff Middle School pool.
With the True Team section meet coming up Saturday in Austin, and with the section meet a month away, Thursday’s meet showed Red Wing head coach Kevin O’Brien that his team is getting into form.
“Our top swimmers are starting to show some fatigue, which is good,” O’Brien said. “We want them to be tired and sore now. That way, when we get to sections and state, they will taper well.”
It was another solid meet for senior Tanner Alms, who won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. Alms took the 200 with a time of 1 minute, 48.97 seconds and the 500 at 4:52.29. Sophomore Hunter Connelly put in another strong swim in the 100 backstroke, winning the race in 54.38.
Alms and Connelly, along with Garrett Welsch and Calvin Roth, took first in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:27.12. In the 200 freestyle relay, Dan O’Keefe, Chris Byrne, Welsch and Alms took second at 1:33.78, which was .30 seconds behind Chanhassen/Chaska’s top 200 relay team.
Byrne found his way atop the podium after winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 190.00.
“We had some times drop from some of the middle swimmers, and our divers had a great meet with almost all of them getting personal bests,” O’Brien said.
After the True Team section meet Saturday, Red Wing’s next dual is next Thursday at Shakopee.
