Boys Swimming: Winger boys fifth at Missota relays
Getting in the water for the first meet of the season Thursday, the Red Wing boys swimming and diving team placed fifth in the Missota Conference relay meet at Northfield High School.
The Wingers finished with 384 team points. Chanhassen/Chaska won with a score of 530, followed by Farmington (476), Northfield (474) and Shakopee (456).
“For the senior boys that swam in the off-season, last night’s meet was very encouraging,” Red Wing head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “They swam well, some of which even beat best times from last year.
“For those that did not swim in the off-season, last night was an eye-opener and hopefully motivation to work hard in practice to make up for lost time.”
Two Winger relay teams finished in second place. In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Hunter Connelly, Ben Schaffer, Nolan Schmidt and Dan O’Keefe came in with a time of 3 minutes, 58.75 seconds. Then in a second 400 medley relay, the Red Wing foursome of Connelly, William Meachem, Schaffer and Mason Voth put together a second-place time of 4:22.08.
Four relays finished in third place: 200 freestyle relay (1:40.49), 200 butterfly relay (1:54.72), 850 freestyle relay (8:40.95) and 400 freestyle relay (3:33.23).
In the 1-meter dive, the Wingers combined for a fourth-place finish with 245.40 points, led by Chris Byrne’s second-place score of 147.20.
Red Wing now has a month to get ready for its first dual meet. The Wingers will return to competition Jan. 3 at Faribault.
“Now with no official meets until January, we have lots of time to teach and train to be ready for the meets to come,” O’Brien said.
