Boys Swimming: Northfield's depth too much for Red Wing
Red Wing took first place in seven of the 12 events, but Northfield’s depth was enough to help the Raiders get past the Wingers 94-92 in a Missota Conference meet Thursday in Northfield.
Red Wing’s 200-yard medley relay team of Hunter Connelly, Ben Schaffer, Nolan Schmidt and Dan O’Keefe opened the varsity meet with a first-place finish in 1 minute, 45.92 seconds. Tanner Alms followed up with a victory in the 200 freestyle at 1:46.05.
Chris Byrne continued to find success in the 1-meter dive, winning the event with a score of 183.20, edging Jack Cuddy of Northfield’s score of 178.75.
After the break, the Gators clinched wins in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle before Red Wing got a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle from Alms (4:45.56) and Calvin Roth (5:17.98). The Wingers followed that up with a first-place time of 1:32.45 in the 200 freestyle relay with the team of O’Keefe, Byrne, Garrett Welsch and Alms.
Connelly nabbed another win in the 100 backstroke (54.19), and the Wingers’ 400 free relay of Connelly, Roth, Welsch and Alms took first place (4:26.73).
Red Wing hosts Simley at 10 a.m. Saturday at Twin Bluff Middle School for its final dual meet. Then on Feb. 8, the Wingers head to Farmington for the Missota Conference championship meet.
