Boys Swimming: Alms, 200 free relay advance at state
Red Wing senior Tanner Alms, and the Wingers’ 200-yard freestyle relay, are in medal contention after the preliminary round of the Class 1A boys swimming and diving state championship meet Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
As he continues his bid for a fourth straight 500 freestyle title, Alms will be competing as the No. 3 seed after a qualifying time of 4 minutes, 47.96 seconds. In a top three field separated by .30 seconds, Alms sits behind St. Thomas Academy’s Warren Sexson (4:47.66) and Fridley’s Alberto Orejuela (4:47.92). Last year, Alms won the 500 free title with a time of 4:36.73.
In the second race of the day, the 200 freestyle, Alms got the No. 2 seed with a time of 1:44.89. Orejuela holds the top seed with a time of 1:44.60.
With all three of Red Wing’s relay teams qualifying for state, the 200 free relay was the only one to qualify for the championship heat with a seventh-place time of 1:30.09. Section foe St. Thomas Academy enters as the top seed at 1:27.80.
The Wingers’ 400 freestyle relay will compete in the consolation heat after placing 13th at 3:24.02. The 200 medley relay team placed 18th at prelims with a time of 1:46.24.
The Class 1A state championship meet gets underway at noon today at the University of Minnesota.
