Boys Soccer: Wingers clinch Lake City tournament
For the third year in a row, the Red Wing boys soccer team took top honors in the Lake City tournament with a 4-1 victory over Byron, followed by a 3-0 win against Stewartville in the championship match.
In the opening match, the Wingers’ Teagan Olin popped in a pair of goals, while Kaden Erie also had a goal. Rodrigo Fernandez also put a tally on the scoreboard, scoring on a free kick from about 24 yards out, according to head coach Brian Quigley. In net, Andy Tarr proved to be as reliable as ever with 23 saves.
In the championship match against Stewartville, it became the Jacob Zebro show on offense as the junior attacker netted a hat trick. Dylan Goggin, Olin and Angel Fernandez each had helpers in the victory.
“Both our starting forwards (Zebro and Olin) have been doing a fairly good job for us putting balls in the back of the net,” Quigley said.
With the pair of victories, Red Wing moves to 5-1 overall, and more importantly, 5-0 in Section 1A play.
“It really boosts our confidence that we’re playing well in our section,” Quigley said. “It’s always good to get a win over Byron, who is usually near the top of our section and was 7-0 in section play heading in.”
The Wingers have a three-game home stand this week. They host Farmington on Tuesday, while Chaska and Kasson-Mantorville come to Red Wing on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
