Boys Golf: Red Wing places sixth at Chaska
Teeing off on Monday, the Red Wing boys golf team faced a tough task in the Chaska Town Course. Ultimately, the Wingers finished the Missota Conference team meet with a score of 334.
It was a solid score for Red Wing, considering that few of the players had played on the Chaska Town Course before, but the course was one that did not play to the Wingers’ strengths, according to head coach Lee Kinney.
“It’s a unique course with a lot of out of bounds and water hazards, and the challenge of not seeing the course before is knowing where to hit it, where to lay it up, things like that,” Kinney said.
Leading Red Wing was seniors Zach Sachen and John Wedrickas, who finished with rounds of 80 and 81, respectively. Fritz Belisle (84) and Andrew Petterson (89) rounded out the team score, and Evan Morem and Cecil Belisle each carded 92s on their respective rounds.
“That consistency up top has been very important for us,” Kinney said. “Then those 4-5-6 positions, they’ve thrown in good rounds when we’ve needed that fourth score to count. Overall, it was a successful day, but we’re still striving for more.”
On Tuesday, the Wingers head to River Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove for another Missota Conference meet.
“River Oaks suits our style a little more,” Kinney said. “Our players have more length than most of the schools do. And with length comes inaccuracy, which today’s course was fatal if you weren’t accurate. Hopefully (River Oaks) suits us better.”
