Boys champs galore from county at SCC regional track meet
HAMMOND - While the top four qualify for sectionals, there were will be many Pierce County boys' prep track and field athletes heading to the WIAA Division 2 Bloomer Sectional Thursday as regional champions from Monday afternoon's meet at St. Croix Central.
One in particular is Ellsworth's Alex Campbell. He finished first in both the high jump at six feet, two inches and triple jump at 44-4. His teammate Brett Freier broke through for a first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a first place time of :42.50. Prescott's Sam Smith was a first place winner in the 200 and 400-meter dashes in times of :22.71 and :51.02 seconds and Cole Hauenstein was first in the 800-meter run in 1:75.02. Prescott's boys team were regional champions in three relays: the 800 meter (Alex Brunner, Harry Cutler, Jack Geiger and Pat Ballosh) in 1:33.42; the 1600 meter (Smith, Ballosh, Geiger, Hauenstein) in 3:26.04 and the 3200(Hauenstein, Geiger, Troy Urman and Zach Sobolewski)in 8:29.28.
Other Pierce County individual qualifiers for sectional from the boys' meet were Campbell, third in the long jump; Prescott's Nick Jacobsen, second in the shot put and third in the discus; Brunner, third in the 100-meter dash; Freier, third in the 110-meter high hurdles; Ellsworth's Logan Blodgett, fourth in both throwing events and the Ellsworth 800-meter relay team, fourth.
There were no county champs in the girls' D-2 regional meet. Qualifying individually for sectionals from Ellsworth was Michaela DeGross in the pole vault after a third place finish and Kennedy Kowalchyk in the 3200-meter run after she finished fourth. PHS qualified Victoria Simones in the 800 and 1600-meter runs as she finished second in both along with Annika Carlson, third in the 3200-meter run; Emily Bayer, second in the 400; Jennifer Kleinschmidt, third in the 300-meter low hurdles. Prescott's 3200-meter relay team took second and the Cardinal girls also qualified their 1600-meter relay team after they finished fourth.
The meet titles went to this year's Middle Border Conference champions, Osceola in girls with 142.5 points and Somerset in boys with 143. Prescott took third out of nine schools with 103 points, just behind St. Croix Central while Ellsworth was fifth with 69 points. Prescott's girls finished sixth with 74 points and Ellsworth was eighth with 62.
The Bloomer Sectional meet begins at 3:45 p.m. Thursday with field events. The running events start at 4:30 p.m.
