Boys Basketball: Z-M drops opener to Byron
Zumbrota-Mazeppa stayed within eight points of Byron in the first half Tuesday, but the Bears pulled away in the second half, outscoring the host Cougars 32-12 on the way to a 69-41 victory.
Byron’s top performer was Buster Meyer, who was 4 of 7 from 3-point range on the way to 20 points. He also had five steals and four rebounds. Lance Mortland and Kip Knutson chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively. As a team, the Bears tallied 18 steals, with Meyer and Knutson each finishing with five.
Ellis Hirman was the only Z-M player in double digits as he went 12 of 15 at the free-throw line to finish with 20 points. Jacob Ugland grabbed eight rebounds and scored seven points, and Jacob Forrey added six points in the loss.
The Cougars (0-1) are on the road on Dec. 3 against Hayfield.
