Heading over state lines to face Hudson on Friday, fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Red Wing came back into Minnesota a winner after a 65-48 victory.

After a 3-pointer by Nick Powers right before halftime put the Wingers up 40-24, Red Wing never relented, holding a double-digit lead for the rest of the contest.

“They were never able to make a run at us. They never got closer than 16 (in the second half),” said Wingers’ head coach Doug Toivonen. “Defensively, we did a nice job and made it tough for them to score.”

Ty Buck led the Red Wing charge with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals, leading a trio of double-digit scorers. Jon Sevlie had 15 points and six rebounds, and Isaac Toivonen tacked on 11 points and three assists.

Off the bench, Ben Munson, Powers and Travis Toivonen accounted for 17 points, including eight from Munson.

“Our bench guys really stepped up when we had some foul trouble in the first half,” Doug Toivonen said.

Hudson was led by Alex Herink’s 13 points. No other Raider finished in double figures.

“Defensively, we did a nice job slowing down Herink, who’s going to (Minnesota State) Mankato,” Doug Toivonen said. “We made it tough to score all night.”

This coming week, Red Wing (6-0) faces a pair of Section 1AAA tests, starting at home Tuesday against Winona. Then on Friday, the Wingers are on the road to face third-ranked Austin in a rematch of last year’s section championship. In that game, the Packers prevailed in overtime, 52-43.

“Winona’s a very well-coached team, and that should be a heck of a game. But we’ll worry about Winona before we worry about Austin,” Doug Toivonen said. “It would be nice to be 7-0 going into Austin. We just have to keep playing like we have, with a lot of energy.”
