Cannon Falls’ seniors weren’t about to let their season slip away.

With Zumbrota-Mazeppa taking a one-point lead with six minutes left in Saturday’s Section 1AA-West opener, the third-seeded Bombers regained their composure and put away six seed Zumbrota-Mazeppa 66-55 Saturday at Cannon Falls High School.

“We did a nice job adjusting to what they’re doing. We got a great group of seniors that know what they need to do,” said Bombers’ head coach Josh Davisson.

Moving on to the sub-section semifinals, Cannon Falls will take on No. 2 seed Hayfield at 7:30 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester. The Vikings advanced with a 72-51 victory over Dover-Eyota Saturday.

The trio of Hunter Johnson, Jordan Lundell and Brock Peterson kept the Bombers alive in postseason play. Johnson had 19 points, five assists and four steals, and Lundell had 18 points and three steals. Peterson shot over 60 percent from the field, finishing with 17 points.

“The seniors decided their season wasn’t going to end today,” Davisson said.

For Z-M, Ellis Hirman had a monster game with 24 points on 9 of 13 shooting with 10 rebounds and three assists. Jacob Ugland nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine boards, and Kurt Gadient had 15 points in the loss. The Cougars end the year at 7-16 overall.
