Boys Basketball: Byron wins HVL title over Cannon Falls
Byron came away as the Hiawatha Valley League champion for the second straight year on Monday as the Gold Division champion Bears topped Cannon Falls 65-61 in Byron.
Up 32-30 at halftime, the HVL Blue champion Bombers could not find their shot in the second half, aiding Byron on the way to a victory. As a team, Cannon Falls shot 5-for-25 from 3-point range.
“They played a little more aggressively, and we didn’t shoot well with a lot of one-and-dones,” said Cannon Falls head coach Josh Davisson. “They got a lot of putbacks and layups, and we didn’t have our best defensive effort.”
Evan Richardson was the Bears’ top player on Monday with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Joe Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds, Tyler Coble had nine points, and Buster Meyer came up with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
For the Bombers, Brock Peterson had a team-high 16 points, while Jordan Lundell had 10 points and Alex Bultena and Austin Noble each tallied nine. Hunter Johnson contributed with eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Byron caps off the regular season with a 19-8 record, while Cannon Falls finishes at 18-9.
Though Monday’s game ended with a loss, Davisson liked having the extra tune up before opening section play.
“The nice thing is (Monday’s game) is the closest thing to a playoff atmosphere without the consequence of lose and you’re done,” Davisson said.
The third-seeded Bombers are the No. 3 seed in the Section 1AA-West playoffs, and will open postseason play at home Thursday against sixth-seeded Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
