Boys Basketball: Byron fends off Cannon Falls
Down 11 points in the second half, Cannon Falls made a big run to take the lead against Byron Friday night in a mid-season Hiawatha Valley League contest.
But the Bombers ran out of gas too soon as the Bears were able to fend off the rally to grab a 52-48 conference victory.
Trailing 28-21 at halftime, then 37-26 later in the second half, Cannon Falls finally pulled ahead 43-39 led by Alex Bultena’s team-high 16 points and six rebounds.
“He’s been playing very well lately, offensively and defensively,” said Bombers head coach Josh Davisson. “He’s probably our most consistent guy right now.”
Byron then started to pressure Cannon Falls, and the Bombers responded with a couple of key turnovers that allowed the Bears to come away with some easy buckets. Byron then hit its free throws downs the stretch to keep Cannon Falls at arm’s reach.
The Bears were led by Buster Meyer, who hit four first-half 3-pointers on his way to a game-best 21 points. Brock Peterson scored 10 points for the Bombers while Hunter Johnson added nine points, five assists, two steals and four rebounds.
Cannon Falls (6-7) will have a week off before its next game on Jan. 10 at Pine Island. The Bombers’ home game scheduled for Monday against Waseca was postponed to Jan. 20 due to the state-wide cancellation of school.
