Cannon Falls used a balanced scoring attack, as well as some crunch-time defense to clinch the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division with a 62-47 win over Goodhue on Monday night.

Alex Bultena put up 14 points while teammate Hunter Johnson added 13 points and five assists for the Tigers. Brock Peterson also hit double-digits with 12 points with Jordan Lundell coming close with eight points and six rebounds. Austin Noble pulled down a team-best nine rebounds

The scoring output is something head coach Josh Davisson said is a byproduct of missing Lundell for a stretch of the season.

“Not that you want to see Jordan go down at the beginning of the season, but I think it helped everyone else. Alex and Brock had to step up, and now we’re seeing that pay off,” Davisson said.

Goodhue led the HVL contest by one with 7 minutes, 15 seconds to play, but Cannon Falls got a couple stops and made a couple of baskets to go ahead 46-45 around the six-minute mark. The Bombers held the Wildcats to just two points over the final six minutes, all while taking care of the ball themselves, committing just three turnovers for the entire game.

“We played strong defensively the last few minutes,” Davisson said. “It was back and forth most of the game. It was a very well-played game both ways.”

Cannon Falls (14-8 overall, 11-3 HVL) heads to La Crescent Friday, then goes home against Pine Island Feb. 10 and Zumbrota-Mazeppa Feb. 11. Goodhue (12-10, 6-10) will see Pine Island Thursday and Randolph Saturday. The Wildcats will not leave home for the rest of the regular season.
