While the boys of summer are off to spring practice in Florida, Red Wing boys and girls can show off their wiffle ball skills at a spring break tournament being put on by the YMCA.

The tournament is scheduled for March 26 and 27 at the Red Wing Family YMCA and is open to all boys and girls in first through eighth grade. In addition to wiffle ball, each day of the tournament will include music, open swimming and a screening of baseball movies.

"We wanted to make an event where kids could just hang out all day while their parents are at work," Youth Development Director Josh Thygesen said. "It'll be a good opportunity for kids to be productive with friends in a safe environment."

Participants will be allowed to pick one friend to be a teammate, and then Thygesen and YMCA staff will combine the pairs to make balanced teams. "That way we won't have an all-star team no one will want to play against," Thygesen said.

Teams also will be divided into sections for every two grade levels to help ensure an even playing field. For example first- and second-graders will be matched against other first- and second-graders.

The tournament will follow a round-robin pool style, in which every team will have a chance to play every other team in its section. Participants can expect to play at least three games over the two-day tournament, Thygesen said.

Games will be played indoors in the YMCA gymnasium, so weather on the days of the tournament won't be an issue, he said.

Entry into the tournament is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Registration includes a T-shirt, with a champion shirt going to winning teams. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

Children under 8 years old must have a guardian present in the building. All parents and guardians can watch the tournament for free, but they will need to sign in at the front desk.

Register by calling 651-388-4724, visiting the Red Wing Family YMCA website or in person. The deadline to register is March 19.
